The New Champlain Bridge project in Montreal, Québec, Canada is a design-build-finance-operate-maintain contract for a 3.4-km (2.11-mile), asymmetric, cable-stayed bridge crossing over the Saint Lawrence River. It is intended to replace the old Champlain Bridge that has been worn down significantly from increased traffic combined with damage caused by road salt and other factors. The new bridge supports eight lanes of traffic, two lanes of the public transit corridor, and a multiuse path. This bridge sees more than 50 million cars, buses, and trucks crossing it each year. It is part of a vital overland link for freight transportation between Canada and the United States. The project also includes a new 0.47-km (0.3-mile) bridge for L’Île-des-Soeurs, 5 km of widening of Highway 15 between the Atwater interchange and the new bridge, and improvement of the ramps leading from Highways 132 and 10 on the South Shore to the bridge. The New Champlain Bridge will enhance Montreal’s cityscape and contribute to the corridor’s status as the main gateway to the city.
